What is Claude?

Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic, a company whose focus is on making AI that is safe, honest, and genuinely helpful. You access it at claude.ai - you go to the website, create a free account with your email address, and you're ready. There is nothing to download, and the free version is fully functional for everyday tasks.

Claude is a text-based assistant. You type a question or a request, and it responds. Unlike a search engine - which gives you a list of websites to visit - Claude gives you a direct answer, written in plain English, as if you were talking to a knowledgeable person.

How to get started

Getting started with Claude is straightforward:

1. Open your web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari - any of them work)
2. Go to claude.ai
3. Click "Sign up" and enter your email address
4. Check your email for a confirmation link and click it
5. Type your first question and press Enter

That's all there is to it. You don't need to configure anything, choose a model, or understand any technical terms. Just go to the site and start asking questions.

Why Claude gives such clear answers

Free tier and paid plan

The free tier of Claude is genuinely useful. There are no time limits and no restricted features - the difference is usage. On the free plan, there is a limit to how many messages you can send in a given period (a few hours). For most everyday use - a few questions a day, help with an email, understanding a document - the free plan is more than enough.

The Pro plan at $20 a month gives you higher usage limits, priority access, and the ability to browse the internet for current information. Most people will not need the paid plan to start with. Try the free version first.

Privacy: what does Anthropic do with your data?

Anthropic's approach to privacy is one of the cleaner ones in this industry. The key points:

• Your data is not used for advertising. Anthropic does not sell your data to advertisers or use your conversations to target you with ads.
• Conversations may be used to improve Claude. Anthropic states that conversations may be reviewed by its team to improve the system. You can opt out of this in your account settings.
• You can delete your history. You can delete your conversation history from your account at any time.

As with all AI tools: don't type in passwords, bank details, or sensitive personal information. Use it for questions, writing help, and understanding documents - not for storing private data.

Limitations

• No voice mode on the desktop website. On a computer, you type rather than speak. The mobile app does have a voice feature.
• Does not generate images. Claude is a text tool. It cannot create or edit photos or images.
• Web browsing is a paid feature. On the free plan, Claude does not have access to the internet for current information. It works from its training data, which has a knowledge cutoff. For up-to-date news or prices, you'd need the paid plan or a different tool.
• Fewer tutorials available. Because Claude is less well-known than ChatGPT, there are fewer YouTube tutorials and how-to guides available online.

Our verdict

Claude is the AI tool we'd recommend if you want the clearest, most thoughtful answers. It's particularly good for anyone who wants to understand something properly - a document, a medical question, a complicated situation - rather than just get a quick answer. It's patient, honest, and respectful of your intelligence.

The free version at claude.ai is a very good place to start. If you find yourself using it regularly, the Pro plan at $20 a month is worth considering - but try free first.
